Although they can kind of be viewed as the same, Public Relations and Advertising are not! I think this confuses many people because they both use the same tactics to each their objective however do not have the same objective. In a sense, yes in both fields, the goal is to sell something. With PR this could be a public figure, a major company, or an idea. With Advertisement this could be a bottle of coke, or toothpaste.
The main differences between the two include: Space, control, and the life-span. With space in advertising a company will pay for an Ad, they will pay for print space in a news paper or pay for air time in a commercial. While with PR, the space is free. Usually companies will release press releases, which is basically free publicity. Moving on to control, with ads a company will have creative control because they are paying for a space. With PR, a company has no control on how the media will present their information to the public. And lastly life-span, this one is probably one of the biggest differences amongst the two. Because in advertisement, you pay for the space, you can run this ad over and over again for as long as your budget allows. This gives advertisement a sense of a larger shelf life. On the other hand, in public relations usually company's send a press release about something once, therefore there is basically only one time for exposure.

Current Event: Morton's Lose
As I have probably blogged before, murder and criminals and this break of the social norm has always fascinated me. And I'm pretty sure it fascinates a lot of society. I just recently read an article on Michael Morton, a man convicted of murdering his wife. The truth is he didn't. And it wasn't until 25 years of being in prison that DNA tests showed and proved Michael Morton innocent.
This story really just makes my heart hurt because it brings light to my eyes that this system of the law is very much flawed. Morton actually says in this article that when you're an innoceent person you think you can just say you didn't do it because it is the truth. But with the way the system works this isn't the case.
This saddest part of this story for me is the lose of the relationship between Michael Morton and his son. When Chiristine Morton was murdered their 3 year old son saw the attack and knew that it wasn't Michael, he told officials "Daddy wasn't home" and described the man he saw. After Michael went to prison, his son refused to visit him because he thought it was embarrassing. I can't fathom having to go through something like this.
To read more of the article I read go to: http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/04/justice/exonerated-prisoner-update-michael-morton/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Assignment Blog: Print News vs Broadcast News
I am a Broadcast Journalism major therefore when deciding which form news a prefer, print or broadcast, I, of course, prefer broadcast.
Even though they are both used for the same purpose. There are many differences between the two when actually writing for them. Some of the main differences between the two is Print News is for the eye while Broadcast News is for the ear. Also print can be reread while broadcast only has one shot to the get the information out. Although there are few there are however some similarities between the two. Appealing to the mass is one of them. When writing for both you have to make sure your words and the way you phrase stuff is appealing to everyone, whether it's a congressman, a teacher, or a cashier at Walmart. Another similarity is the element of timeliness. Both forms of news are very much based on time!
When writing both, they differ in tone. in print news there is a formal tone and in broadcast there is a conversational tone. Because of this there are many pros and cons to both. I like writing for Broadcast more because of the conversational tone however it is difficult writing for it because sentences have to be short and to the point. Because of the fact that Broadcast news is broadcasted there is the whole issue with time and how long you have to speak about a certain topic whether it's 45 seconds or 4 minutes.

Free-Be: WE FINALLY WON
After 2 years and 23 games the University of Southern Mississippi Football team had finally won a game. And boy was it blow-out. Being on the dance team, I have been to every game this past football season and I have seen every defeat! It was hard being a freshman and never experiencing a win, that is until this past Saturday.
It was so weird, we were getting ready to dance for half-time and I looked up at the score-board and saw UAB with 21 points and us with 14. I thought to myself well, looks like we're going to lose. Again. Nothing was new. When those Golden Eagles walked out on the field for the 3rd quarter they just completely took over, I mean it was touch down after touch down after touchdown. No one could even react, we were all dumb founded. I have to say you know its God's work when the lowest ranking team in Divison wins and the highest ranking team loses. Roll tears roll to that!
For those of you who didn't experience this victory like I did, the Hattiesburg American has pictures of the Football players returning home: http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/article/20131202/SOUTHERNMISS/312020009/USM-victory-product-never-giving-up

Current Event: Tornadoes
The other day I got on Netflix and saw the movie Sharknado was available to watch, I had
nothing better to do so I decided to watch it. I am he sort of person that in
real life I am a total scardy cat but I get this thrill of watching scary
movies. Anyways I watched the whole thing and realized a tornado has never even come remotely close
to me. At school sometimes we would have drills but nothing
ever too serious. Just last year a tornado flew right across the front of USM’s
campus, I wasn’t here then. Although I am just "blessed" with the impact hurricanes other people have the fear of tornadoes.
This morning I read an article about the tornados in
Illinois. And my heart really goes out to those affected. Ir breaks my heart
knowing that so many people were devastated by this and lost almost everything.

In Honor of Our Veterans and Actives: Current Event
Yesterday for Veteran’s Day, the Pride of
Mississippi Marching Band and The Dixie Darlings walked down Hardy Street in the 3rd Annual Veterans Day Parade
Having to get up early and get dressed and ready to walk about a mile didn’t seem like something I really wanted to do on
a Monday morning. When I arrived at the start of the parade I saw so many
veterans and immediately felt guilty. When the
Pride starting playing all of the patriotic music I really started thinking. I
guess I have never really known someone who has gone into combat. My Paw Paw had
very flat feet so he wasn’t drafted into the Vietnam War. But I do have a cousin
that is in the National Guard, however we don’t talk that much. A girl I graduated High School with actually
went the West Point and is now training for the Army. Which I never really realized, but is so amazing and inspiring.
Yesterday social media was blowing up with
pictures of my friends' relatives who were veterans or actives and in some way I felt connected.
I am actually a major history buff; I have always done well in
history classes. Even though I learned about all the American Wars in High School I started researching Wars. The ones I seemed to linger on were the Civil War and the Vietnam War. I know it’s kind of weird but one of my favorite movies is The
Patriot, however it's not really for the gruesome fighting and the intense patriotism. It's mainly for the romance and the time period (the Plantations and Dresses).
As I was walking through the parade little kids were holding up signs saying “We
love You” and “We support you.” and chanting "USA USA USA" it was adorable but insanely eye opening. I used to of the same thing, but I honestly
didn’t know who I was loving and what I was supporting. But what is so amazing is that we are taught at such a young age to have so much pride in our nation and to love those are servants to it. I have always had
respect for our troops and seeing them around campus really makes me want to
walk up to the them and hug them and say “Thank you for your service.” Our troops
are a representation of our country and I could not be more trusting and proud
of them
I Absolutely Love This Weather: Free-be
Living in the South, we don’t generally have four seasons.
There isn’t a distinct Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall. There’s basically three
and a half seasons. Those would be a scorching hot summer leading into an extremely humid fall which
then leads into maybe two of three months of bipolar cold weather which
eventually turns into sort of a rainy spring that’s more like a summer.
I mean in the bipolar
winter one day it’s freezing and you can pretty much gear up for snow and the
next you might as well wear a bikini. However right now on this Tuesday morning
of November 11th. the weather
is absolutely perfect. And I mean perfect. My iPhone tells me it currently 54
degrees and the high of the day will be 64 degrees but the wind is blowing
which is making it a tad bit chillier. One of my favorite parts of this weather
is the clothes that come with it! I absolutely LOVE sweaters, boots, and
scarves. And right now the weather is at that point where you can wear a
sweater or a light jacket and be totally comfortable.

Sarah Day
